Definition of Ikhlas: Its Essence, Challenges, and How to Attain It
Quoting from one of Buya Yahya’s lectures on YouTube, this article will explain the meaning of Ikhlas, its significance, and the methods to achieve sincerity in deeds and worship, as well as the dangers of Riya and Ujub that can invalidate one's deeds.
Definition and the Essence of Ikhlas
Ikhlas is a fundamental concept in Islam referring to a pure and sincere intention when performing an action, where the sole purpose is to seek the pleasure (Rida) of Allah alone.
A person with Ikhlas does not expect praise, flattery, or worldly rewards from humans. Good deeds performed with sincerity are not influenced by the presence of others, whether they are being watched or not.
An individual who possesses Ikhlas acts out of a pure heart's urge to worship Allah, not out of a desire to appear pious in the eyes of others. This sincere intention is the core of sincerity, which distinguishes between deeds that are accepted and those that are not.
The Importance of Sincerity in Deeds
Ikhlas is the primary requirement for a deed to be accepted. No matter how grand or numerous the deeds are, if they are not based on a sincere intention, they will not be accepted by Allah.
Conversely, a deed that appears small or trivial in human eyes can hold an immense reward if performed with a sincere heart. This demonstrates how great the value of intention is in the sight of Allah.
There is a story of a person who entered Paradise simply because they removed a piece of wood obstructing the road. This simple act became the cause of their salvation because of their pure intention to help others. Thus, Ikhlas transforms simple actions into high-value worship.
Challenges in Attaining Ikhlas
The greatest challenges in attaining Ikhlas are Riya and Ujub. Riya is the desire to show off or be seen by others while performing a deed, whereas Ujub is a feeling of pride or excessive self-admiration for the deeds one has performed.
Both are the main enemies of Ikhlas that can ruin a deed. Riya can be so subtle that it is described as "the footsteps of a black ant on a black stone in the darkness of the night." This shows how difficult it is to recognize Riya within one's heart.
One might lose their Ikhlas due to fear of mockery or fear of being called "holier-than-thou," which essentially shows they are still seeking the validation of humans.
Furthermore, insincere intentions can arise when someone does good for worldly gain, such as memorizing the Quran solely to obtain a scholarship or other material benefits. These challenges prove that Ikhlas is a lifelong struggle requiring constant vigilance.
Ways to Achieve Ikhlas
Here are several practical tips to attain Ikhlas:
1. Constant Self-Evaluation: One must always correct their intention before, during, and after performing a deed.
2. Perform Worship in Secret: Strive to perform acts of worship known only to yourself and Allah. This helps train the heart to stop seeking human praise.
3. Setting an Example: Performing deeds openly is permissible if the intention is to provide a good example (Uswatun Hasanah), as long as the heart remains clean from Riya and Ujub.
4. Gratitude and Humility: Always feel that the worship performed is far from perfect and is a great blessing from Allah. This will keep Ujub away.
5. Reflecting on the Consequences of Riya: Thinking about the bad consequences of Riya, both in this world and the Hereafter, can serve as motivation to avoid it.
6. Prioritize Obligations: Ensure that the deeds performed align with the Syariat. For example, paying off a due debt is more paramount than giving Sadaqah (charity), as debt is an obligation that must be fulfilled.
Overall, this article serves as a profound guide on Ikhlas, a spiritual foundation that is vital in the life of a Muslim. It not only defines what Ikhlas is but also provides insight into the challenges faced and practical ways to achieve it. (Buya Yahya)
