Understanding the Types of Sin and the Way of Tawbah
Fydeen.com - Every human being has certainly stumbled into sin. However, Islam provides a beautiful way out through the door of Tawbah (repentance). In one of his lectures, Abuya Habib Segaf Baharun outlined how a servant should behave when realizing their mistakes so that the repentance truly brings about a fundamental change.
The Three Pillars of Tawbah Nasuha, For a repentance to be classified as Tawbah Nasuha (pure repentance), there are three responses of the heart and actions that must be present simultaneously:
1. Abandoning the Sin
Immediately stopping the sinful act without delay.
2. Promising Not to Repeat
Planting a strong commitment within the soul that in the future, similar acts will not be committed again.
3. Deep Regret
Constantly feeling sadness and regret whenever remembering the sin committed, while seeking Allah's forgiveness.
Understanding the Classification of Sin, Abuya explained that not all sins are handled the same way in terms of repentance:
1. Shirk
This is the most dangerous sin. If someone dies in a state of Shirk without having the chance to repent, the door of forgiveness is closed for them.
2. Sins Against Allah
Sins that are purely a matter between the servant and the Creator. These sins can be dissolved by fulfilling the three conditions of Tawbah Nasuha mentioned above.
3. Sins Against Fellow Humans
This is what often becomes an obstacle in the Hereafter. Allah will not forgive this sin unless the aggrieved party or the victim has given their forgiveness. If it relates to property, it must be returned; if it relates to the tongue (Fitnah or insults), one must apologize directly.
A Special Message for Families, Specifically, Abuya reminded us of the importance of mutual forgiveness within the household. He urged wives to be proactive in seeking forgiveness from their husbands, as there are often the husband's rights that are neglected or hurt feelings that go unexpressed. This is important to prevent claims on the Day of Judgment, where every mistake, no matter how small, will be reminded by Allah to be resolved.
Conclusion, Tawbah is not merely a verbal utterance, but an internal revolution involving commitment and the restoration of relationships, both with God and with humans. Settling affairs in this world is far lighter than being held accountable before the court of Allah, the Most Just.
