Hadith of Halal, Haram, and Syubhat and Its Explanation
Hadith on Halal, Haram, and Syubhat (Doubtful Matters) - On the authority of Amir, who said: I heard Nu’man bin Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him) say: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say:
"Verily, that which is Halal (permissible) is clear and that which is Haram (forbidden) is clear, and between them are Syubhat (doubtful/ambiguous) matters which many people do not know.
Whoever guards himself against these doubtful matters has protected his religion and his honor, and whoever falls into these doubtful matters falls into that which is Haram—like a shepherd who pastures his flock around a sanctuary (Hima), he is likely to graze therein at any moment.
Behold, every king has a sanctuary, and indeed, the sanctuary of Allah is His prohibitions.
Behold, in the body there is a morsel of flesh; if it is sound, the whole body is sound, and if it is corrupt, the whole body is corrupt. Behold, it is the heart." (Narrated by Imam al-Bukhari)
Explanation of the Hadith
The Prophet (PBUH) intended to guide the perfect Muslim toward refining their consumption of food, drink, clothing, marriage, and other aspects of life. By doing so, they truly attain what is Halal and avoid all forms of Syubhat (ambiguity), thereby preserving and safeguarding both their religion and their honor.
Imam An-Nawawi stated:
"This [Hadith] encompasses three categories: First, the clear Halal, such as fruits, speech, walking, and the like. Second, the clear Haram, such as intoxicants (khamr), carrion, blood, adultery (zina), lying, and the like. Third, doubtful matters, which are ambiguous and not clearly Halal or Haram; these are known by the scholars."
Those who possess Wara’ (pious caution) always avoid ambiguous matters to remain safe. The Prophet (PBUH) provided an analogy, mentioning that every king has a restricted territory (sanctuary) guarded against trespassers.
Anyone who enters it faces punishment, whereas a cautious person who guards himself will not even approach it, let alone enter it, for fear of falling into transgression. Similarly, Allah (SWT) has His prohibitions—namely, all acts of disobedience. Whoever commits even a small portion of them deserves punishment, and whoever nears ambiguous matters is feared to fall into them. This was the view expressed by Al-Karmani.
Furthermore, the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) called upon his Ummah to rectify their intentions and purify their inner selves, from which knowledge and thoughts originate, and from which the soul is motivated and strength arises—namely, the heart.
The heart is the ruler of the body, while the other limbs are its subjects. The heart is the axis upon which all parts of the human body revolve.
